Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin has slammed Germany’s treatment of Mesut Ozil after the playmaker felt compelled to retire from international football due to racism and prejudice.
Ozil took a picture with President Erdogan which sparked widespread criticism in Germany given the Turkish leader’s human rights violations against his population.
“Surreal that someone who has done so much for his country on and off the pitch has been treated with such disrespect,” Bellerin said on Twitter upon hearing the news.
“Well done @ MesutOzil1088 for standing up to this behaviour!”

For Ozil, however, he was simply showing respect to the leader of his parent’s country and despite calls for him to be removed from the squad ahead of the World Cup, the 29 didn’t publicly address the situation and focused on football.
Germany obviously crashed out at the group stages and despite only starting two out of the three games, Ozil was blamed for their failure.
All sorts of dirt were thrown on the 29-year-old’s name and most it had a racist underdone given Ozil’s Turkish background, and talk quickly shifted to whether Ozil needed re-affirm his commitment to Germany and if he should sing the national anthem more forcefully.
The World Cup winner hasn’t hidden away and on Sunday Ozil released a three-part statement on social media calling out the highest officials among the DFB and retired from international football.
The silence from the other German players are World Cup has been deafening and they’re complicit in this campaign against Ozil despite their failure as a team.
At least the Arsenal boys are behind Ozil.
