Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka claimed that his latest contract extension proves that he has the full backing of new head coach Unai Emery.

The club confirmed on Friday that the 25-year-old has signed a new long-term contract which, according to the Swiss FA, will run until 2024.

Xhaka already had three years remaining on his current deal so this is a substantial affirmation of faith from the Gunners hierarchy.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach star has been much maligned since he arrived in England in 2016, with many questioning his determination and ability as a defensive midfielder.

However, Xhaka was one of the most highly-rated players in the Bundesliga, and will certainly be looking to revive his career under Emery.

“On the one han,d shows me the importance that I have acquired at Arsenal, and I feel so also an appreciation from the new coach,” Xhaka said while on international duty.

“That gives me a lot of planning security, London remains my centre of life for years,” he added when asked about the length of his contract.

“I have shown that I can withstand the enormous pressure and now the next step has to follow.”
