Ian Wright not having any of the Mesut Ozil slanders…

Arsenal legend Ian Wright hit back at the critics of Mesut Ozil after the German playmaker was targetted for his lacklustre display in our defeat to Stoke City.

Whenever we lose, the contribution – or lack thereof – of Mesut Ozil is brought into sharp focus, especially when we lose in the manner we did last week.

Ozil’s demeanour has long been discussed, with the 28-year-old often looking disinterested when things are not going his way, especially when he’s out of possession.

However, Ian Wright feels Ozil done his job against Stoke City, creating many chances for his teammates.

“What, the one that’s already created 10 chances for his teammates when he’s supposed to be having a nightmare? Because he looks frustrated when he loses the ball or something happens? ”  Ian Wright questioned.

“If I’m Arsene Wenger, I’m saying ‘When he gets the ball, I just want you to back him up, and if he loses it you get it back and give it back to him to let him get on with it again.

“Because some players you have to give them the licence to do that. The stick he gets, it really annoys me, it jars me.”

Ozil is an extremely creative player, but for me, his contributions in possession don’t warrant the privilege of doing anything when he’s without the ball.

The World Cup winner is given freedom to do less work off the ball, but it’s really costing us.

Only two other players in world football are offered that luxury at top clubs – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, and they make up for it with excessive goals.
