Jamie Carragher weighs in on goalkeeper-gate at Arsenal…

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher is baffled by the discourse surrounding our goalkeeper situation after Mikel Arteta dropped Aaron Ramsdale for David Raya, CBS reports.

Raya kept his place for the Champions League win against PSV on Wednesday night, indicating that Arteta will not seek to rotate and has made the Spaniard his No.1.

The Brentford loanee has been a target for the boss ever since he was appointed Arsenal manager in 2019, with the 28-year-old consistently linked across multiple windows.

Matt Turner’s permanent departure to Nottingham Forest provided Arteta with the opportunity and resources to make the move.

While many wonder why Arteta has made the decision, Carragher feels the answer is simple – Raya is the better player between the sticks.

“I understand having two goalkeepers of a similar ability; I understand mentally it might be a problem for the goalkeeper,” Carragher explained.

“But surely if Mikel Arteta thinks he can get a better goalkeeper in the building, he has to make that signing to make Arsenal a better team.”

When quizzed by his colleague Peter Schmeichel on if he felt Raya was the better goalkeeper, Carragher said: “100%. Arsenal will never win the league Ramsdale in goal, no chance!”

One wonders how much Ramsdale’s nationality factors into why this simple change has caused such furore.

Arteta, on many occasions, vowed to never forget the capitulation at the end of last season and he clearly wanted to upgrade on certain positions.

Declan Rice has come in for Thomas Partey, Kai Havertz for Granit Xhaka and Raya has replaced Ramsdale. As Carragher says, it’s that simple.
