Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher believes Arsenal have no chance of winning the Premier League title next term and questioned the club’s mentality after hearing a worrying interview with Arsene Wenger recently.
The former Liverpool defender quoted Wenger’s comments about the club’s ambitions while on our pre-season tour of Australia, when the boss stated that trophies shouldn’t define a football club (via Daily Mail).
Carragher believes that while many clubs around the world admire Arsenal for certain values, it’s that lacklustre attitude towards winning trophies that Wenger has which he believes will inevitably prevent us from making the next step.
Wenger signed a new two-year contract last summer amidst calls for him to walk at the end of his last contract, and Carragher feels that only a Premier League title would justify that decision.
“One thing that massively worried me from Wenger was a quote in pre-season when he said ‘trophies aren’t the most important thing’,” Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Debate show.
“They’re a great club, well run and have great values and many look up to them.
“That mentality though is the difference between them and Chelsea.
“It explains why Chelsea have dominated under Roman Abramovich – it’s that ruthlessness where finishing second is not good enough never mind top four.”
Carragher certainly has a point and one thing many hope for is some change in our fortunes given the familiarity of our failings in recent years.
