John Cross gives his take on Arsene Wenger’s future…

The Mirror’s chief football writer John Cross this week claimed that the Europa League may not be enough if Arsene Wenger is to keep his job this summer.

Wenger claimed back in October at the AGM that he would sit down with the board again at the end of the season to determine his future, just months after extending his contract.

Even then, it would’ve been hard for Wenger to envisage such a campaign ahead, one in which we’re 33 points off league leaders Man City and scrapping in the Europa League to save face.

The competition represents our only chance of silverware this season, it’s also our realistic route into next season’s Champions League, but Cross feels that isn’t enough for Wenger to keep his job.

“He’s got to win the Europa League to kind of stand any chance,” the journalist told beIN SPORTS.

“And you know what, I still think he could win the Europa and still think he could go in the summer.

“That is the point I’ve been making throughout this crisis and it was reaffirmed in the strongest possible terms by someone who’ll know – that he will absolutely not walk.

“It’s his life, he’s on a great contract – I don’t think that’s the most important thing – but he will not see this as failure.”

For someone who’s able to sit in front of Wenger every week, one wonders why John Cross doesn’t ask the boss why he feels finishing sixth and over 30 points behind the champions as anything but failure?
