Jose Mourinho still harbours hopes of landing Granit Xhaka…

Roma boss Jose Mourinho has been tipped to go back in for Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka when the summer transfer window reopens in June with the 29-year-old a top target for the Serie A side, Gazzetta Dello Sport reports.

The Italian side conducted a quite public courting of Xhaka last summer with fans being led to believe that a deal was imminent while the Swiss international was at the Euros.

Xhaka and Mourinho weren’t exactly discrete with their intentions either, with the two exchanging several messages visible to the public on social media.

However, shortly after our former skipper returned from his summer holidays, Mikel Arteta poured cold water on any exit talk and instead extended Xhaka’s contract.

According to the report, the fee was the sticking point between Arsenal and Roman when talks were taking place last summer and with Xhaka now on an even longer contract, it’s hard to see how the valuation gap will be narrowed.

With the absence of an international tournament next summer, perhaps the club will see it as a good opportunity to finally revamp the midfield and relieve us of our reliance on the former Borussia Monchengladbach man.

While Xhaka has been solid for us, we haven’t qualified for the Champions League since he arrived in the team and the subsequent importance various managers have placed on him.

Xhaka and Alexandre Lacazette are important members of the team at the moment, but if we’re to evolve, Mikel Arteta must source players that can offer what they do – and more!
