Jose Mourinho revealed that he’s a massive fan of Arsenal new boy Kieran Tierney…

Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho lavished praise on Arsenal new boy Kieran Tierney as he sat in the Sky Sports studios for his punditry debut.

The Portuguese coach was asked to run the rule on our new signings and he was extremely eager to stress how impressed he was with the Scottish international.

Tierney joined from Celtic on deadline for a reported fee of £25million and while the 22-year-old is currently recovering from hernia surgery, Mourinho believes Arsenal have a player on their hands.

Tierney was targetted by the club due to the lack of belief in our options at left-back given that Unai Emery now wants to play with a back four this season.

Nacho Monreal, who Mourinho compared Tierney to, has been a solid option in that role over the past few years but is now entering the twilight years of his career.

Sead Kolasinac, the other obvious choice, operates better in a left wing-back role as he did for much of last season and for his previous club.

“Tierney is like a young Nacho Monreal,” Mourinho said on Sky Sports.

“He is the same kind of profile. He’s reliable, looks a good character, looks a great personality.

“He looks a little like someone from a previous generation in some aspects.

“He has a humble way of behaving and I like his profile.”

Mourinho’s description of Tierney has a player ‘from a previous generation’ is equally understandable as is it is exciting.

One thing any manager wants from their full-backs is reliability and consistency, something many have said Tierney embodies.

Bacary Sagna was one, in recent years, who gave us exactly what was expected of him for a number of years and if Tierney is anything like the left-footed version of the Frenchman, we’ve signed a sensational footballer.

The Scottish international is expected to make a return to the first team in 4-6 weeks.
