Tony Evans calls for heft Wenger ban…

The Evening Standard journalist Tony Evans has called for Arsene Wenger to receive a hefty ban for his altercation with Anthony Taylor if the FA are serious about protecting referees.

Wenger was sent off by Jon Moss for protesting the award of a penalty in injury time for Burnley and didn’t seem like he wanted to move from the tunnel after the game.

When followed by Anthony Taylor, Wenger seemingly gave the fourth official a nudge indicating him to go back and do his job on the touchline.

However, apart from a hefty fine, Evans has called for Wenger to be made an example of to protect referees.

“I think the only thing we can do is protect the referees and hope they get it right,” Evans said on the Football Writers Podcast.

“I think they should start here with a 10-game ban for Wenger, put him in the stands for 10 games. And maybe even a stadium ban.”

Jonathon Northfcroft’s reaction to Evans’ statement says it all given its ridiculous and excessive nature. Given that Luis Suarez and John Terry got lighter punishments for racially abusing fellow players on the pitch, it puts Evans’ statement into perspective.

The fact that he’s calling for more protection for referees is even more laughable. They are the some of the most guarded set of employees in any industry across the world.

They single-handedly ruin great spectacles – sometimes deliberately in the case of Mike Dean – and are never able to be questioned about their decisions.

Check out Evans’ statements about Arsenal which begin around the 06:20 mark.
