Ian Wright responds to Mesut Ozil…

Arsenal hero Ian Wright labelled Mesut Ozil’s swipe at former Gunners legends for their apparent criticism of the players in the press as “laughable”.

Speaking on Radio 5 Live, Wrighty claims he’s taking Ozil’s comments personally given that he’s one of the big Arsenal voices of ex-players in the media.

In a long statement released on his social media channels on the fourth anniversary of his arrival, Ozil called on former Arsenal players to “behave like legends” and support the team instead of criticising.

Wrighty felt Ozil’s comments were rather ironic given that the German midfielder is yet to commit his long-term future to the club.

“I’d rather see Mesut Ozil with his ability – and I have been on this show so many times, and I have protected him and I’ve protected Arsene Wenger – sign a contract,” Ian Wright said.

“If you feel that strongly about people criticising the team – because you’re integral to Arsenal’s success and you’re not signing a deal, and you’re probably going to continue to hide behind the fact that [Alexis] Sanchez is the one that everybody is going to say ‘is he going to go yet?

“What are we supposed to say, that they’re unbelievable, and in the board room, and the boss, and the way they’re playing?

“Because they’re not. I can’t understand it, a player that is not actually performing on the pitch is calling people out, and he’s not signing a contract, it’s laughable.”

Ozil’s statement was rather bizarre in terms of its content and timing, especially given how easy a rebuttal is for ex-players who’ll continuously point to his lack of long-term commitment.

If you haven’t committed to the club long-term, taking a swipe at legends who’s achieved everything with the club isn’t a smart idea.
