Liverpool Legend Sounds Gunners Warning: ‘Arsenal Will Make Reds Pay For Defensive Errors’

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol believes Arsenal can punish his former side’s defensive mishaps…

Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has warned his former side that their recent defensive instability will be punished by Arsenal if they don’t shore up ahead of Saturday’s clash at Anfield, ESPN reports.

While the Reds sit at the top of the table following wins against Norwich and Southampton respectively, they haven’t looked secure at the back and have gifted the opposition chances.

Liverpool thrashed us 5-1 in December in an evening which signalled a turning point in our season as we eventually missed out on a top-four spot.

For Nicol, however, he’s seen some defensive weaknesses creeping into his former side’s game and with messers Aubemayang, Lacazette and Pepe in town, he fears for the European champions.

Southampton, in particular, should’ve walked away from that game with at least a point, with former Liverpool striker Danny Ings missing a sitter in the last kick of the game.

“If it [Liverpool’s defence] gives up the chances it gave up against Southampton, they’re going to lose a lot more goals,” the ESPN FC pundit said.

“Southampton showed that they lack quality in the attacking third as far as taking chances are concerned.

“When you’re up against Aubameyang or Lacazette or even a Pepe now, they are not going to pass up those chances.

“I think there’s a little bit of work for Klopp to do on the training field between now and next weekend.”

With Manchester United yet to play, Liverpool and Arsenal are the only teams with 100% records this season and that will all change by Saturday night.

For Klopp’s side, they’ve chosen stability over evolution in the transfer market so we’ll know what we’re up against. However, Unai Emery could field three of our four major signings in the starting XI at Anfield.

Dani Ceballos must be a show-in after his show-stopping display against Burnley, while Pepe and David Luiz improve us significantly.

It will be an entertaining clash!
