Lucas Perez has been given a reprieve…

Arsenal striker Lucas Perez was given a hero’s welcome after he returned to Deportivo La Coruna following a disastrous first season at the club.

Lucas joined us 12 months ago from the La Liga and seemed like a panic buy at the time after missed out on Jamie Vardy and Alexandre Lacazette.

After activating his €20million release clause last summer, the 28-year-old figured sporadically for the first XI early on, playing mainly in the League Cup.

However, he netted a brace in his first start in that competition, and then went on to score a hat-trick for his first Champions League start at Basle.

It quickly became apparent that Lucas was an extremely efficient player who never seemed to be fancied by Arsene Wenger for an unknown reason.

The forward scored or assisted nearly every time he featured for us, although that didn’t seem enough to land him a regular starting berth.

Lucas remained patient and very rarely spoke out, which led to him being cast away towards the back-end of last season where he barely made the squad.

While this move is pencilled in as a season-long loan, one would be surprised to see him in an Arsenal shirt ever again.
