Arsene Wenger has stated that without the backing of the fans, the team cannot have the successful season it’s aiming for after a turbulent start to the season.
Wenger has been speaking to beIN Sports during the international break to try and pour some cold water on a flame that seems to be brewing among the fan base.
After a 4-0 mauling at Anfield, the boss has labelled the game as an “accident” and wants fans to help the team back on its feet for the season ahead.
“People make their minds up very quickly and you forget how good you are – much quicker than you think,” Wenger said.
“We must continue to believe in our strengths and not forget. And our fans as well, to have a successful season we need our fans. Our fans can say “our squad is not good enough” or “we are not good enough” and think “OK, we have no chance this year” – that will not work.
“What we learned from this defeat is that we were not at all at the level that is expected from us and that we must, very quickly, show that was a complete accident.”
Wenger has a habit of disregarding each heavy defeat as an “accident”, but they seem to keep occurring over the past few years with no sign of change.
Last season alone, we had similar displays at Tottenham, Liverpool, Chelsea, West Brom, Crystal Palace and Bayern Munich.
Actions speak louder than words, but in Wenger’s case, I think it’s beyond showing and proving. Fans want him gone.
