Paul Merson believes the next generation of stars will replace Aaron Ramsey…
Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson believes that the players coming through the ranks may have convinced Unai Emery that he can allow Aaron Ramsey to go on a free, he said on Sky Sports.
Ramsey is set to leave on a free transfer next summer, that’s if the club doesn’t decide to ship him to the highest bidder in January, as we saw last year with Alexis Sanchez.
The Welshman has publicly claimed that he was ready to sign an extension and that an agreement was close, but the club removed the offer and told him he’s free to go.
The decision has left many scratching their head, but Merson feels the youngsters we saw make a name for themselves on Thursday will likely be promoted to the first team.
“I think there is a couple of good kids coming through and I think the manager has looked at it and gone, you know what, ‘I can’t give you £200,000 a week, I can probably get better somewhere else’,” Merson said on Sky Sports’ debate show.
"It is like us having a £10m house and letting the freehold run out"

“I’m not saying me, I think Ramsey is alright, I just think the manager has looked at it and gone I can’t give you that kind of money and thinks he can get better.
“The lad Smith Rowe looks like he is going to be a player. He might be one of them he thinks, who knows, next season I can bring him in steadily.”
Smith Rowe is one of the brightest talents coming from the youth squad and has already made a significant impact, scoring twice in the Europa League.
He’s already technically superior to Ramsey and looks like he can match the work rate demanded by Emery. The likes of Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Joe Willock are also making noise in the midfield.
