Arsenal legend Paul Merson has questioned why the Gunners didn’t make a move for 36-year-old Gareth Barry who was released by Everton in June.
Barry has been picked up by Tony Pulis at West Brom, who saw the England international as a replacement for Darren Fletcher who departed for Stoke City.
However, while many fans have called on Arsene Wenger to loosen the purse strings and go big in the transfer market for a midfielder, Merson would’ve endorsed a move for Barry.
“A great signing [for West Brom], Why didn’t Arsenal sign him?” Merson questioned.
“He gets the ball, he moves it forward quickly, he doesn’t mess about. He gets the ball, he gives it the Ozil, he gives it to Sanchez.
“He’s never going to go anywhere, he’ll stay where he is. He keeps his shape. I think it’s an unbelievable signing for West Brom.”
One has to wonder how Merson would’ve reacted had Wenger signed a 36-year-old Brazilian on a Bosman who’d been released from a foreign club.
In the list of bizarre statements, this certainly tops anything Merson has previously uttered.
A player of Barry’s current profile shouldn’t be anywhere near a club aiming to challenge for the title. If he’s no good for Everton, then how can he be an option for us?
