Southampton 0-2 Arsenal…
Arsenal kept their top-four hopes alive with an impressive 2-0 win at Southampton as we ended our wretched league record at the south coast club.
We haven’t won at Southampton for 14 years with our last league visit a contender for one of our worst ever league performances as we succumbed to a 4-0 defeat.
Days after we ended our poor run in the league against Manchester United, it was imperative that we took full advantage of the games in hand and we’ve certainly taken the first step.
We survived a few scares in the first half as Manolo Gabbiadini and Nathan Redmond were kept in check by Petr Cech with a few smart saves.
With the game entering a lull, Alexis Sanchez picked up the ball in the penalty after he started a move just inside Southampton’s half, sent two Saints defenders to sleep, and smacked a left-footed effort past Fraiser Forster.
The home side were then forced to come out and the chances start to flow for us, with the game eventually being settled by Olivier Giroud.
We still have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League after Liverpool dropped points at home to Southampton at the weekend, though we’re still in need of a few favours.
Having said that, we’ve won all our games bar once since moving to a back three. Coincidence?
