Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has made it clear that the Europa League is a major target for him this season and that the players are fully on-board.

Speaking at a La Ciudad del Futbol conference in Spain alongside Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, Emery claimed that English clubs have often neglected Europe’s second-tier trophy though he vowed to not follow suit.

Indeed, the former Sevilla man has won the trophy on three occasions and knows that winning it a fourth time would see us qualify directly to next season’s Champions League.

After winning our opening two Europa League games in which almost all our first team players have appeared in, Emery is putting his money where his mouth is.

“In England, the culture is that the Premier League is the first competition, and the second one is the Champions League,” Emery told reporters.

“It’s a competition where the English didn’t see that they could develop and find a place, it was a sacrifice too big.

“I am in this competition and I’m telling my Arsenal players it is very important because it is a title and an open door to the next Champions League.”

Emery’s stance on the Europa League is admirable, but hopefully, he’s aware that no English club competing in that competition for an entire season as finished higher than fifth in the league.

If he’s going to put most of his eggs in the Europa League basket, one hopes they all hatch.
