Unai Emery is prepared to welcome Mesut Ozil back into the fold…

Unai Emery has seemingly softened his stance on Mesut Ozil and has praised the 31-year-old’s recent attitude in training which could see him return to the matchday squad, the Spaniard told reporters (via ESPN).

Speaking ahead of our trip to Sheffield United on Monday night, Ozil was the topic of conversation given that he’s been absent from the last three matchday squads even though he was match-fit.

Emery often skirted around the question of Ozil and claimed that other players deserved the slots ahead of the former German international, an explanation which was baffling to many.

Ozil has since spoken out about the situation and knowing the shrewd PR team he has around him, the interview with The Athletic was certainly designed to win back the support of the fans and heap pressure on Emery.

Also, when we put in dire performances as we have in our last two Premier League games, leaving out our most creative player will only enhance the former Real Madrid star’s case.

“I didn’t close the possibility for him to play,” Emery explained.

“Because I want him to be OK and ready with being available for training and giving us a good feeling every day. Then he can play. My idea is to use every player and he is one.

“The player can help us. He has very big skills and quality we will need in the next matches. I am happy now how he is improving and training every day. He is one player more in that squad.”

Ozil is good enough to be included in our matchday squad and one hopes that his episode of power posturing from Emery ends and sees the playmaker return.

Admittedly, his qualities aren’t suited to every game, but when we’re looking to be “protagonists” as Emery has often claimed, Ozil needs to play.
