Wenger backs Ozil…

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has backed Mesut Ozil after the playmaker came under fire for his performance against Manchester City last week.

Pep Guardiola’s men dominated the game and it seemed as though the German was not interested, especially when we were without the ball and struggling to get it back.

The age-old discussion about his work rate has once again resurfaced and Wenger has made it clear that Ozil doesn’t get any preferential treatment when it comes to his work without the ball.

“I don’t give him any leeway. Ozil has to do his work like everyone else and usually he does it well,” Wenger told the press ahead of our Boxing Day clash vs West Brom.

“His body language speaks against him.”

The boss was then presented with a stat which showed that only Eden Hazard has won the ball back in the final third on more occasions than Mesut Ozil in the Premier League.

It certainly disproves some notion that the playmaker is completely inactive without possession, but Ozil certainly needs to stop drifting out of games when the going gets tough.
