Ex-Arsenal Striker: Gunners Fans Have Been “Spoilt By Success”

Paul Dickov has a message for Arsenal fans…

Former Arsenal striker Paul Dickov has chimed in on the current situation at the club and claimed that our fans have been spoilt by the past successes of Arsene Wenger.

Dickov left Highbury the same summer Wenger came in, though that hasn’t prevented him from appreciating the job done by the Frenchman at Arsenal over the past 20 years.

Dickov believes that the hugely successful period in Wenger’s first decade in charge has heightened the expectations of fans and feels that we’re desperate for those times to return.

Asked if Arsenal fans are traditionally spoilt by success: “I do, I do,” Dickov replied.

“The players they had, you think of Thierry Henry, Vieira, Petit and the great team they had all the way through.

“The fans, in the last couple of years at Highbury and then moving into the Emirates have been spoilt by success.”

Dickov also went on to regurgitate the argument about the rise of clubs backed by wealthy owners such as Chelsea and Manchester City in recent years.

Labelling Arsenal fans as a group of supporters “spoilt by success” couldn’t be further from the truth given that many have tasted vast amounts of success before Arsene Wenger was even known.

Those who witnessed six trophies in nine years under George Graham – including that famous night at Anfield – as well as the moment Bruce Rioch, signed our greatest ever player; surely they haven’t been ‘spoilt’ during Wenger’s reign.

This just reinforces the idea that Arsenal fans are held to a different standard compared to our Premier League counterparts. We owe our existence to Wenger, according to some, while other fans can ridicule managers who won them trophies they could never have imagined celebrating.
