Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard lavished praise on Arsene Wenger for maintaining his FA Cup record after we defeated Chelsea to win it for an unprecedented 13th time.

Wenger also wrote his name into the history books by becoming the most decorated manager in the competition’s history with seven wins, a feat Gerrard feels is untouchable.

With the boss coming under severe criticism this season for our performances in the Premier League and Champions League, Gerrard claimed that Wenger was suffering from falling below his own standards.

Speaking on BT Sport, the former midfield general feels fans have little to complain about when it comes to the FA Cup.

“Wenger, when he came in, was winning leagues and competing for Champions Leagues,” Gerrard explained.

“He’s set a standard, and over the last decade, they haven’t followed that standard in terms of Champions League and the league.

“They (the fans) can’t complain in the FA Cup with that record. No-one will ever match that.”

As Arsenal fans, it is okay for us to revel in FA Cup success while demanding more from the club – those two things can be mutually exclusive.

We didn’t have to finish 5th to progress in this competition; it’s a knockout competition which cannot be a suitable metric to judge our campaign by.

There’s huge room for improvement.
