Former Arsenal striker John Hartson admitted that he believes that Arsene Wenger must be shown the door at the end of the season, despite his deep admiration for the Frenchman.

Hartson played under Wenger during his first season in charge, though the Welshman feels the current run of form cannot be ignored and the buck must stop with the manager.

The game against Crystal Palace appears to have been an eye opener for many onlookers who previously backed the manager, with the team currently slipping into midtable mediocrity.

While Hartson believes that the players produced an “inept” display against Crystal Palace, Wenger’s time is up.

“I worked under Arsene Wenger and I’ve always sort of been in the camp of ‘Arsene Wenger’s great, but I just think now it’s time for him to go,” Hartson said on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It hurts me to say that because I like Arsene Wenger.”

Hartson may well be the only player to have played under Wenger openly calling for him to be removed from his position as Arsenal manager at the end of the campaign.

If our former players truly cared for the club, then surely they’d put their personal admiration of Wenger aside to see exactly what is happening before us.

Laying the blame squarely at the players, despite the fact that we’ve seen a huge turnover of the playing squad over the past decade, is rather foolish.

Wenger can no longer deliver the expected results and should therefore not be offered a new deal come May.
