Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain joins Liverpool…
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has completed his expected move to Liverpool in a deal reportedly worth £40million after rejecting an extension to his current contract.
Like Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Jack Wilshere, The Ox was in the final year of his contract and despite previously stating that he’d stay, Arsene Wenger was clearly not prepared to have him walk away on a free.
It seems the club has prepared – and projected – for the free departures of Ozil and Sanchez next summer, but adding Oxlade-Chamberlain to that list may have been too much.
Arriving from Southampton at the age of 17 in 2011, the winger made 199 appearances for us in all competitions, scoring 20 goals and aiding us to three FA Cup wins in the last four years.
His goal return has always been poor judging by how many times he appeared for us, especially given that most of those games came in a wide-forward position.
Selling to a rival is never a good thing, but Oxlade-Chamberlain has failed to deliver on the early promise he showed as a frightening winger, with injuries and a lack of personal ambition halting his development.
This move may be one The Ox felt he needed to kickstart his career, but it remains to be seen if he can even break into Liverpool’s set-up.
