Arsenal fear Rob Holding’s season could be over after the 23-year-old was stretchered off against Manchester United following a clash with Marcus Rashford, the Mirror reports.
Holding, who played on the left of a back three, was bringing the ball out of defence and attempted to check back onto his right foot before Rashford crashed into his planted leg.
Immediately, upon reviewing the clip, it was clear to see that something had gone wrong there and that Holding’s season was in serious pain.
According to the report, the club seems prepared for the worst as they fear he’s ruptured ligaments in his knee which would rule him out for 6-9 months.
Speaking after the game yesterday evening, Unai Emery revealed that the early signs weren’t good, though they had to wait for further tests.
“At the moment, the first news is not good,” the Spaniard said.
“The doctors are looking at him and they are going to communicate with us.”
If our worst fears are realised, losing Holding at this stage of the season is a big blow for us, but it’s a more significant blow to his development.
The former Bolton man has been our most consistent central defender this term and has developed into one of Emery’s most reliable lieutenants.
If we’re looking for positives in this situation, young players often find that an extended period on the sidelines can allow them to work on other areas in their body which may have been neglected during their development.
Thus, cliche aside, I hope Holding does come back stronger.
