Arsene Wenger has complete faith in the strength of his squad to challenge for the league this season and stated that he’s looking to lessen the numbers in the group before the window closes.
Wenger was asked if we can expect any further additions this summer, though the boss is more concerned with departures in order to allow some youngsters to get a chance this season.
The likes of Reiss Nelson and Joe Willock are on the cusp of the first-team, and it seems Wenger will use them in the cup competitions and is looking to create a clear path to the first-team for them.
“I am completely happy with the strength of the squad and I have too many players, some with no chance to compete for places,” Wenger told the press.
“One of the values of this club is to give a chance to young players, and if you have too many players of confirmed status you are in a difficult position. We have three or four [young players] who deserve a chance.”
This window has been very disappointing so far in terms of what we expected to happen by now, with the club even struggling to get players off the wage bill.
Kieran Gibbs, Lucas Perez and Mathieu Debuchy are still contracted to the club, despite all parties accepting that a move away is best for all involved.
In terms of incomings, we haven’t done enough to compete at the top-end of the table.
