Arsenal defender Calum Chambers has welcomed the competition at centre-back this season following the arrival of Brazilian international David Luiz, The Evening Standard reports.

Chambers, who spent last season on loan at Fulham, started our opening game at Newcastle United last week and impressed as we kept a rare clean sheet away from home.

Last season, we had to wait until April to secure our first clean sheet on the road after a 1-0 win at Vicarage Road against Watford.

Luiz arrived from Chelsea on deadline day to bolster our defensive options following the departure of Laurent Koscielny, and many expected him to go straight into the side.

However, with Unai Emery known to make new signings work for their positions in the team, Chambers may well enjoy an extended run in the side.

He seems like a great guy. He is a great player, too,” Chambers said about the Brazilian.

Competition will bring the best out of people. At a club like Arsenal, that is how it should be.

While Chambers’ performance at Newcastle was impressive, it would be rather naive to expect that from him on a weekly basis when he’s shown vulnerabilities in the past.

Even at a side like Fulham, Chambers was quickly moved into midfield which is where he enjoyed most of his best performances.

Luiz should be thrown into the side imminently and one imagines that it will be the returning Rob Holding who the Brazilian will partner for the majority of the season.
